Google May 2026 Core Update: What Happened and What to Do

The May 2026 core update started on 21 May and finished on 2 June. Twelve days, and plenty of movement. If your traffic shifted in late May, this is what drove it and what I would do about it.

What it was

A standard broad core update, confirmed on the Google Search Status Dashboard. No new policy, no single feature. But the pattern underneath was specific enough to name, and it tells you exactly where to put your effort.

The theme: an intent-destination reset

Across the rollout, visibility moved toward whichever source type was the better fit for the real job behind the query. More canonical, more local, more task-complete, better matched to the market and the format the searcher actually wanted.

That is why some highly authoritative domains still lost ground. Being the right destination for the task is what carried pages, and plenty of high-authority sites that were not that destination slipped. Aleyda Solis broke this down well: intent, market fit and source type drove the biggest swings.

The data: a redistribution, not a cull

One mid-rollout analysis of 8,887 domains found 5,039 gained visibility and 3,845 lost it. Google moved visibility around rather than simply punishing sites. Some clear examples:

  • In the UK, pronunciation and language Q&A aggregators fell hard. YouGlish down 69.6%, Forvo down 68.1%, while a reference brand like Cambridge.org rose 40.9%.
  • Task-destination marketplaces gained. Trip.com up 82.2% and ZipRecruiter up 44.8% in the US, Indeed up 25.9% in the UK. Reddit slipped 13.7% in the US.

Read those pairs again. The losers were intermediaries that sit between the searcher and the answer. The winners were the place the searcher actually wanted to land.

The bit most people missed: AI Overviews

Here is the number that should worry you more than any ranking change. On queries with a heavy AI Overview, position-one organic click-through rate fell from around 27% to as low as 11%. That is close to a 60% drop in traffic from the exact same ranking position.

So you can hold your rank and still lose more than half your clicks, because the AI Overview answered the question before anyone scrolled. This is why I keep telling clients the win now is being cited inside the answer itself. You can hold your rank and still watch the clicks evaporate, because the Overview resolved the query before anyone scrolled. What to do now

Three moves, in order of impact.

1. Lead with original expertise. Generic, restated content lost. First-hand experience, real data and a point of view won. If your page could have been written by anyone with a search bar, it is exposed. Add the thing only you know.

2. Fix your market fit. For ecommerce and international sites this was the single biggest lever. Check the correct country version of each page ranks in each market, and tighten hreflang, currency and shipping signals. Wrong-market pages were among the heaviest losers.

3. Be the destination, not the detour. Look at your top pages and ask one question: is this the place the searcher wanted to land, or a step on the way to it? If it is a step, the update has already told you what happens next.

My take

Every signal Google has published over the past year points the same way: be the most useful, original, correctly matched destination for the searcher’s actual task. May enforced it harder than any update before it.

That is the same E-E-A-T message I have been giving for two years. Experience and expertise you can prove. Content that matches intent. A brand the rest of the web talks about. The updates keep getting sharper at rewarding it.
