June 2025 Google Core Update

The June 2025 Core Update was the first major update to incorporate MUVERA at scale. I tracked it closely across client sites and wrote this summary as the rollout was happening. The pattern that emerged was consistent: sites with fragmented single-intent content took the biggest hits, and sites with strong E-E-A-T signals recovered fastest.

What happened and when

The June 2025 Core Update began rolling out on June 30 and completed on July 17, a rollout of just under three weeks. It was the first core update where the influence of MUVERA (Multi-Vector Retrieval and Re-Ranking) was clearly observable at scale in ranking movements. Previous updates had shown hints of multi-vector assessment; this one made it unambiguous.

The sites I was tracking that took the hardest hits had a specific profile: reasonable domain authority, decent content quality, but a content architecture built around thin individual-intent pages rather than comprehensive topic coverage. A site might have had 15 separate pages each targeting a narrow variation of a similar topic, each page adequate for its specific keyword, but no page that addressed the topic comprehensively. The MUVERA pattern in practice

MUVERA assesses pages using multiple embedding vectors simultaneously, asking in effect: does this page address the range of intents that cluster around this topic? A page about “local SEO” that covers GBP optimisation, citation building, on-page local signals, and review acquisition comprehensively will score more strongly than four separate pages each covering one of those topics superficially.

This does not mean longer content always wins. A 3,000-word page that pads a narrow topic does not satisfy multi-vector assessment any better than a 700-word page on the same topic. The question is comprehensive coverage of the related intent cluster, not word count. I saw 1,400-word pages gain significantly where they covered their topic well across multiple related subtopics, and 2,500-word pages lose where they repeated the same narrow argument at length.

The winners from this update tended to have three things in common: comprehensive topic coverage on their key pages, strong E-E-A-T signals (particularly author attribution with verifiable expertise), and coherent internal linking that helped Google understand which pages were authoritative on which topics.

Which sites recovered and which did not

Recovery patterns were clearer than in previous updates. Sites that had been suppressed by the September 2023 helpful content update and had genuinely addressed their E-E-A-T gaps recovered strongly in June 2025, the combination of improved attribution and more comprehensive content made them net beneficiaries. Sites that had made surface-level changes (adding author names without genuine bios, padding content without adding substance) did not recover and in some cases lost further.

New losses came primarily from the fragmentation pattern described above. Sites with 20 thin location pages or 30 narrow keyword-targeted posts took hits. Sites that had consolidated their content around comprehensive coverage of specific topics, fewer pages but more complete ones, either held or gained.

What to do if you were hit

If your traffic dropped around June 30, 2025 and has not recovered, the diagnostic question is: do you have a large number of pages each targeting a narrow variant of similar topics? If yes, the strategic response is consolidation, not deletion. Identify clusters of related pages, merge the best content from each into a single comprehensive page, set up 301 redirects from the merged pages to the new canonical URL, and update internal links.

This is time-consuming but the alternative, waiting for the next core update while continuing to publish narrow content, is likely to compound the problem. Recovery requires the next core update to evaluate your site again. If you address the consolidation in the next two to three months, you should be in a better position when that update arrives.

E-E-A-T gaps are the other priority. Check whether your key content pages have named authors with genuine bios, whether your About page makes the expertise behind the site credible, and whether you have any off-site signals, citations, press coverage, industry directory listings, that validate your claimed expertise. These take longer to build than content changes but their absence limits recovery regardless of content quality.
