How to Get Your Website Featured in AI-Generated Results (Without Guessing)

AI Overviews started appearing at the top of UK Google search results in late 2024. By early 2025 they were showing on a meaningful proportion of informational and how-to searches. The immediate question from most of my clients was the same: are these taking our traffic? The honest answer is: sometimes yes, sometimes no, and the pattern is specific enough to be useful.

AI-generated results are Google synthesising an answer from multiple web sources and displaying it above the organic listings. The source pages do not necessarily appear at the top of the traditional results, but the ones Google draws from for its AI answer are almost always in the top five organic positions. Which means the path to appearing in AI Overviews runs through organic ranking, not around it.

Which queries trigger AI Overviews

AI Overviews appear most consistently on informational queries, “what is X”, “how does Y work”, “best way to Z”, and on queries with a clear factual answer. They appear less on transactional queries (“buy X”, “X near me”, “book Y appointment”) where Google’s traditional results are more directly useful. They appear rarely on navigational queries where the user clearly wants a specific website.

For local businesses, the queries most likely to trigger AI Overviews are the informational ones around your service category, “what is technical SEO”, “how long does SEO take”, “what should an SEO audit include”, rather than the commercial queries that drive actual leads. This is important context for evaluating impact: if AI Overviews are reducing click-through on informational queries that were not converting anyway, the commercial damage is limited.

What the evidence says about traffic impact

The data on AI Overviews and click-through rates is genuinely mixed. Some studies show significant CTR reductions on queries where AI Overviews appear. Others show that when a source site is cited within the AI Overview, its clicks can increase, because appearing as a cited source functions like a recommendation. My own experience tracking client sites aligns with a more nuanced picture than “AI Overviews = traffic loss”.

The sites most at risk are those that ranked in positions 3-10 for informational queries and were not cited in AI Overviews. They lost visibility without gaining citation visibility. The sites least affected, and sometimes benefiting, were those ranking in the top two or three positions and appearing as cited sources. This reinforces a pattern I have seen repeatedly: the difference between ranking position 1 and position 5 matters more than it used to.

How to maximise your chances of being cited

Google’s extraction system for AI Overviews favours content that answers the specific question directly and early. If your page takes three paragraphs of context before answering the question in the title, Google’s extraction system may find a different page that answers it in the first sentence. The practical implication: put your direct answer as close to the top of each section as possible, not at the end after a build-up.

FAQPage schema markup makes your Q&A structure legible to Google’s systems. When you mark up your FAQ section with correct schema, Google can identify the questions and answers as discrete units rather than extracting them from flowing text. Clean H2 and H3 hierarchy, where each heading is a question or clear topic, helps the extraction system understand the structure of your content.

The content signals that matter for AI Overview citation overlap substantially with the signals that matter for traditional ranking and E-E-A-T. First-hand expertise, specific examples from your own experience, original analysis not available elsewhere, these are what Google wants to surface in answers it is putting its own brand behind. Generic, derivative content is less likely to be cited even when it ranks.

AI results beyond Google: Perplexity and ChatGPT

Perplexity is a search tool that searches the web and cites its sources directly in the response. Unlike Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity shows explicit citations with URLs and gives users a clear path to the source pages. My own site was cited in a Perplexity response for “SEO consultant Bath” before I was ranking top five in Google for that term. The citation came from a page with strong topical specificity, it mentioned Bath repeatedly in a specific context, rather than from general domain authority.

ChatGPT with browsing enabled can also surface your site, but less predictably than Perplexity. The queries that tend to produce source citations in ChatGPT are specific professional service queries in specific locations, and queries about niche topics where the model has limited high-confidence training data. For these queries, being the most specific and credible source on the web for that particular question is more valuable than broad domain authority.

Frequently asked questions

Answers synthesised by a language model that appear at the top of search results above the organic listings. Google AI Overviews is the main UK example. The sources Google draws from to construct these answers are almost always pages ranking in the top five organic results for the query.

Rank in the top five organic results for the query. Structure your content so the direct answer appears early in each section rather than buried after context paragraphs. Use FAQPage schema to make your Q&A structure legible to Google’s extraction system.

Both can happen. Sites ranking positions 3-10 without appearing as cited sources typically see CTR reductions. Sites ranking in the top two or three and appearing as cited sources can see traffic increase. The impact is query-type specific, informational queries are most affected, transactional queries much less so.

Generative Engine Optimisation, optimising content to appear in AI-generated answers rather than traditional ranked listings. In practice, the signals that help with GEO and traditional SEO overlap substantially. Both reward genuine expertise, specific examples, clear structure, and content that directly answers the question being asked.

Not with a separate strategy. The content signals that help you get cited in Perplexity and ChatGPT with browsing are the same ones that help you rank in Google and appear in AI Overviews: topical specificity, genuine expertise, structured content, and original information not available elsewhere.
